Joe Losiak and Bill Bright share a historic connection rooted in the global expansion of Cru (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ), which directly sparked a massive spiritual renewal movement in communist Poland during the ‘70s.
The Connection & The Challenge
· The Visionary: Bill Bright founded Campus Crusade for Christ in 1951. He was famous for challenging American students to take the Gospel to foreign universities and closed nations.
· The Student: Joe Losiak, a Polish-American exchange student from Chicago, attended Cru’s massive "Explo '72" event in Dallas. Inspired by Bright’s call to global ministry, Losiak left to study at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, in 1974.
The Breakthrough in Poland
While in Poland, Losiak discovered the Oasis (Light-Life) movement, a dynamic Catholic youth renewal organization led by Father Franciszek Blachnicki that aimed to counter the communist regime. Losiak bridged the gap between the two ministries:
1. Introducing Cru Materials: Losiak realized the Oasis movement shared Cru’s passion for a personal encounter with Christ. He introduced Fr. Blachnicki to Bill Bright’s famous discipleship tools, including the Four Spiritual Laws booklet and Ten Basic Steps.
2. The 1976 Exchange: Losiak reported the breakthrough back to Cru leadership. By 1976, Cru sent a delegation of American students to Poland to help teach the Gospel at Oasis retreats.
3. Meeting the Future Pope: During this period, Losiak and his peers had a breakthrough meeting with Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (the Archbishop of Kraków, who would become Pope John Paul II). Losiak presented him with the translated Four Spiritual Laws, which Wojtyła reviewed and subsequently encouraged his priests to use.
The Legacy
The partnership forged by Losiak using Bright's evangelical frameworks bypassed strict denominational barriers. It successfully integrated evangelical discipleship methods into the Polish Catholic youth. This ecosystem laying a foundation for historic evangelism efforts in Eastern Europe that continue to this day.
